According to Indonesian Business Daily on April 5th, the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas) is collaborating with the World Resources Institute (WRI Indonesia) to develop a decarbonization roadmap for the nickel industry.
The agreement was reached during an event held in Jakarta with the theme of "Launching the Preparation of a Decarbonization Roadmap for the Nickel Industry as an Input to the Draft National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) for 2025-2029". This agenda involves various stakeholders such as policy makers, industry, academia, and associations.
Vivi Yulaswati, Deputy Minister of Ocean Affairs and Natural Resources of the Ministry of National Development and Planning, stated, "The preparation of the decarbonization roadmap for the nickel industry will be carried out through the participation of all stakeholders, including the private sector, various ministries/technical institutions, and academia, to jointly discuss a series of challenges and implement solutions for the sustainable development of the nickel industry." She said that during this process, the National Development Planning Department/National Development Planning Bureau welcomes cooperation with the World Resources Institute of Indonesia, as it is an independent research institution that will provide comprehensive contributions. This includes research, data analysis, and policy recommendation design to support the emission reduction efforts of Indonesias nickel industry supply chain.
According to the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045, the decarbonization of the nickel industry is considered to greatly promote the agenda of economic transformation and development. On the other hand, economic transformation is also a key strategy in the medium-term planning document aimed at freeing Indonesia from the middle-income trap.
It is reported that the decarbonization roadmap for the nickel industry will further combine economic ambition with achieving emission reduction targets, based on Indonesias commitments made in the 2015 Paris Agreement. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to establish a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and ethical nickel industry ecosystem, with the mission of producing high value-added products and being able to compete in the global market.
